How to turn a daily activity into a CAS experience
How to turn a daily activity into a CAS experience
CAS is a fairly simple long-term requirement to accomplish, that is as long as you understand what takes a mundane activity into an experience you can include in your profile. The whole idea behind CAS is to foster a different kind of learning that gives way not only to acquiring knowledge but also personal growth.
Therefore, any activity that takes you out of your comfort zone or allows you to develop a skill you already hone is an experience you can use for CAS, following these steps:
1.) Set a specific goal or challenge within the activity: This will allow you to do an activity like walking your dog without staying in your comfort zone.
2.) Structure the activity using the five CAS stages: This will ensure you complete a well rounded experience with thought behind it.
3.) Align with the CAS Outcomes: This will allow you to verify that the experience has the ability to make you grow, gain another perspective and/or reflect.
4.) Demonstrate what you’ve learned: In your reflection and demonstration reflect how the experience has changed you or made you do something you usually wouldn’t have done
CAS is about reframing mundane things in a way that can make you reflect on what goes into them and your take aways. With these steps you can take something like cooking for yourself and turn it into “preparing five budget-friendly, nutritionally balanced plant-based meals to learn international culinary techniques”.
CAS is already hidden within our daily lives, all it takes is a little definition, structure and a set goal in order to be able to include it as part of said requirement. So the next time you find yourself doing a mundane task, ask yourself: What can I do to turn this into a challenge?
